Foam Gaskets – Uses and Applications

Foam provides superior barrier and bonding capabilities for gasketing, cushioning, sealing, mounting and insulating applications in a wide variety of industries including appliance, automotive, HVAC, medical, electronic, lighting and more. At Standard Rubber Products Co. (SRP), we offer custom die cut foam gaskets to meet a variety of industrial needs.

Foam gasket applications may include:

  • Insulation
  • Electrical absorption
  • Cushioning
  • Fluid Restriction
  • Noise reduction
  • Weather resistance

Types of Foam Gaskets

Foam gaskets range in cell structure, from open cell to closed cell. Open cell foam gaskets are primarily used for shock or vibration applications, and closed cell foam gaskets are used primarily for environmental seals where outdoor conditions become a factor. These gaskets can be manufactured in Silicone foam, EPDM foam, Neoprene foam, foam tapes and more.

Foam Gaskets for a Sealing Application

One of our customers in the Heating, Ventilating, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) industry was looking for a better, more efficient way to keep their units more dependable in the outside environment. What they needed was a sealing gasket using material that would outperform what they were currently using to seal their units from outside contaminants.

Without a proper seal, outside contaminants can easily get into these HVAC systems and cause them to function improperly and eventually stop working. SRP suggested using microcellular urethane foam to create the perfect seal to prevent dust, dirt, and water from entering their heating and air conditioning units.

After we decided to go with the microcellular urethane material, our engineers designed dovetail gaskets to improve material utilization and to also improve the assembly process.

Overall, our solution resulted in a higher-performing, more efficient product.
