Neoprene Gasket – Types and Applications

Neoprene Gaskets – Uses and Applications

Neoprene is an extremely versatile material that can be found in virtually every industry across the board. It can be die-cut, water jet cut, slit, molded and is available with pressure sensitive adhesive. Neoprene is usually supplied in sheet or roll form.

What is Neoprene?

Neoprene is a material made from synthetic rubber designed to be flexible, durable, resilient, and very resistant to compression and liquids such as water, oil, and other solvents. Neoprene gaskets are generally made for sealing applications. This material offers the following unique features:

  • Water resistance
  • Weather resistance
  • Thermal and moisture insulation
  • Cushioning and protection
  • Lightweight
  • Chemical and oil resistant
  • Neoprene Gaskets in the Marketplace

A manufacturer of outdoor electric meters approached SRP with a sealing application that required a low cost, medium hard gasket that would be weather and abrasion resistant with a temperature service range of -30F to +175F.

Upon evaluating the requirement, it was determined that a gasket made from general purpose, 50 durometer Neoprene would be the perfect seal for the electric meter. 50 durometer Neoprene has a temperature operating range of -30F to +200F, which was exactly what this company was looking for.

An additional benefit of using 50 durometer Neoprene for this particular application, as stated above, is the fact that it is has good resistance to water absorption, very good resistance to abrasion, oxidation, ozone and sunlight aging. All of these benefits combined created a high performing, economical gasket that exceeded the company’s expectations.

The Neoprene gasket offers a variety of different solutions for many different applications. This is an extremely diverse material that can handle some of the toughest conditions.
